Aberdeen Council Introduces Yellow Woods Challenge

Pupils across Aberdeen will be demonstrating their green credentials over the next seven weeks as they take part in a competition to recycle as many old Yellow Pages directories as possible.

The Yellow Woods Challenge is a simple, educational and fun environmental campaign for schools, run by Yellow Pages working in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Aberdeen City Council.

Competing schools receive free educational packs to teach children all about the environment and they will be hoping to win one of the big cash prizes on offer. Yellow Pages will award a total of £600 to schools that recycle the highest number of old directories per pupil plus a £100 bonus prize.

Ron Clark, lead councillor for the environment said: "Encouraging children to get involved in recycling and learn about the environment at a young age is a great way of creating a green generation for the future.

"This scheme not only has immediate benefits, by helping to keep Yellow Pages directories out of landfill sites and having them recycled instead, but it also holds benefits for the future by ensuring the planting of trees and the education of youngsters on the importance of being environmentally friendly and thinking about what they throw away. It sets a clear green agenda for the future.

"It is very easy for school children and the wider community to get involved with this initiative. Just tear the cover off your old Yellow Pages, give it to a child at a participating school and put the rest of the directory in your white bag to be collected at the kerbside with your other recycling."

The Aberdeen City Yellow Woods Challenge runs from 11 May until 26 June 2009. For more details visit www.yellow-woods.co.uk or call Laura Blair at Aberdeen City Council on 01224 489394.
